I re-discovered my love for Joshua Radin this week.

Back in 2005 when WE WERE HERE hit stores, I was working for SonyBMG promoting the album... I remember being kinda bored with the songs since the music seemed so low key, but after a couple of years of ear growth and opening another copy (I still have several sealed ones in my closet... maybe I will do a contest or something for one) and trying to get myself to calm down from a fit of anger, I realized how truly well written his album is... Since then I have not been able to stop listening to it.

It all started with the new song SKY, which I heard while stumbling through muxtape... I went directly to iTunes and bought it on the spot. I LOOOVE this song, listen to it on Joshua's myspace page to see what I have been obsessed with all week... (Yes, I was obsessed, just ask Kelsea)

Like a Duet made in heaven... Joshua and Ingrid Michaelson.

Check out the old stuff, check out the new stuff, check out his face (it is pretty nice to look at), just check him out! As I understand it, we are due for another full length from Joshua late summer... I don't know about you guys, but I will be looking forward to it.

How can you not love Miley Cyrus???

I'll be honest. i Love Miley Cyrus! So cute, and so talented. She's is taking over! well i guess the whole Cyrus family is! they deserve it, as they are the nicest family i've met in the business. One time I gave Billy Ray Cyrus one of my Hell Ya! mixes when I met him a while back @ one of the first Metro Station shows - - and the next time we spoke - he told me which songs he liked best!!! WTF!?!?! BIlly Ray you rock!! That shit never happens!

ok wow - i haven't blogged since the 80's or something - - or so it feels like! sorry for the lack of communication and updates. although, if you are on my facebook friend's list - - you have probably seen my rediculous updates (such as going to parties w/ Ryan Seacrest, meeting JC from Nsync at my club night, running into Bret from Flight Of The Conchords again @ the secret BECK show, going to the KATY PERRY carnival @ capitol records for her release party, recording w/ Jeffree Star & Danger Radio, seeing COLDPLAY do a long practice and set @ Jimmy Kimmel Live, you get the picture . . . )

i've been having a blast and soooooo busy lately. it seems too smooth actually - - i'm waiting for some shit to hit the fan. i'm not used to everything going my way without a huge fight. haha. if you worked 6 yrs @ KROQ, and 4 yrs @ Capitol Records to date you would probably feel the same. it's been a constant struggle to get people to really pay attention, and now, i believe everyone is really listening. If not now, maybe soon enough you can be just watching . . . stay tuned! ;)

SO work is going really well - - i most recently came across this cute video of DUKES OF DAVILLE - check it out - - Matt Mahaffey (my favorite producer - and the reason I found out about the Dukes) tells the same story I do, about how I played him Gnarls Barkley 'Crazy' and he responds with playing me DUKES OF DAVILLE 'Steady'! the rest is history!

I am so excited about this record - - Dukes Of Daville are going to be huge! It's so good, that I can't believe I'm even involved. I used to get frustrated about not being able to sign bands, being A&R for the past 4 years at a major record label - - but not anymore! it's about quality, not quantity.

"It's not what good girls do..." I know I know, Katy. I'm into guys, but I would totally kiss you.

I just picked up Katy Perry's new CD One Of The Boys and it is just sooo good that it makes me wanna be bad. A fun, fancy-free straight forward pop album with a little girl rock flare, I have a feeling that this CD will be my summer soundtrack.

As a girl in her 20's living in LA, Katy speaks my language, from the fact that nearly all of my close friends are guys (One Of The Boys), to that time I was hanging over the porcelain throne after a few too many vodka-crans SWEARING I was going to move home (Lost), to the time when I ended up drunk, locked out of the hotel room, wandering around the strip for 6 hours (Waking Up In Vegas)... And of course that dare from the boys where I wounded up lip locked with my best friend (I Kissed A Girl)... I feel almost any girl could find a little bit of her own story here. And for the guys, did I mention Katy is hot? (See above picture)

Hey Hell Ya-ers!

Wow it has been a while…

I made myself my new Summer mix CD about a week ago and it has yet to leave my car. Covering everything from Duffy to Does It Offend You, Yeah? the CD has been keeping my interest for far longer than half of the guys I have dated in the last year... Ha! (but oh so true)

One of the songs is a new one from my boys, The Postelles...

These boys have been even busier than I have. After just wrapping up a tour of the UK and France, these barely-old-enough-to-vote boys have recently released their EP on iTunes, got booked for BOTH Bonnaroo and Lolapalooza, and have a new song recorded with Strokes superstar Albert Hammond Jr. The new song 123 STOP is a catchy summer-tune that makes you want to drive around with your windows down, singing along, not caring about the rising gas prices or the lady in the car next to you giving you the you’re-so-crazy look. And we aren’t the only ones talking about them. They have been played on Radio One in the UK and have a slew of press and A&R following… Check out 123 Stop on their myspace page and pick up their EP on iTunes.

As for me, I have been busy busy with all that is life. One of my best friends got married last weekend... Huge music lovers, I walked down the isle to Bright Eyes’ “The First Day of My Life” (I was a groom's lady)… No average wedding march for the Bride either, she walked to Iron and Wine’s cover of “Such Great Heights”.

They had one of the BEST DJs I have ever experienced at the wedding... DJ Jester the Filipino Fist is his name, and though he wouldn't play me any Mark Ronson, he did mash some great tunes together and kept us dancing for hours on end (everything from swing to hip hop). As I understand it, he is a touring DJ, so I highly recommend seeing him... Check out his myspace here.

****another bragging post alert****

Yeppers I did make it to see MGMT on wednesday . . .

MGMT were playing a secret party thingy @ the Avalon. I heard through fellow HellYa!Deejay Kelsea (who is always the one that finds out about all things secret and awesome / ala NKOTB!)

so it's the 11th hour, here are my 2 options - - which do you suppose i did?

a) not be a douche, suck it up and just go home and wonder what i am missing . . .

OR

b) be a total douche and ask for tix at the last minute. and it's super sold out. bonus.

so of course i chose B! haha.
if it was anybody other than AMANDA WALK @ COLUMBIA i wouldn't have been this stupid. so please kids reading this - - hard work does pay off - and if you stay in the biz long enough - you can make a request like this without getting your ass kicked or fired . . .
AWALK is a real friend, not just an industry hookup. I could probably call her from JAIL and she would bail me out - - - that's how much she rules. :)

this is amanda - if you see her - - give her a hug or a high five. cause she rules.

MGMT just keep getting better and better every time I've seen them. I started out as a hater - - then slowly turned - - but the 3rd show I was begging LIZ @ the Echoplex to let me DJ the MGMT/Yeasayer show. Which i did, and it was mindblowing! THANK YOU as always amanda - - how'd you like my Hell Ya! mix? (minus the tracklisting haha)

we ran into Mischa Barton outside and I walked right up to her and said 'you are really beautiful!' cause she is! (and NO MOM i'm still not a Lesbian) but thank goodness she was wearing pants, as i hear she has a case of some serious cellulite. WTF?
don't worry Mischa! it could be worse! Lucky you didn't get stuck with butterface! she's pretty much perfect, but i'm glad to know that she is flawed too! she should keep that shit under wraps! literally!

overall MGMT=awesome
HUGE props to MAUREEN KENNY is pretty amazing at her job - - she signed both MGMT and METRO STATION this past year! CONGRATS MAUREEN! It's so great to see women kicking ass in the biz. GIRL POWER!

(**sidenote - METRO STATION is now #9 on TRL!!! Damn!! Remember when I booked them to play Hell Ya! night and they played right after BECK?!?!? That was bananas. And since half of the band was 17 at the time, they didn't realize how cool that show was for them. they will always be able to say BECK opened up for THEM. HAHAHA. hellya.)

so yeah every once and a while you have a revelation - - or at least i do - - and i just ponder on how freakin AWESOME my life is sometimes!

does that ever happen to you? well i am constantly thanking my lucky stars at where i am today, but i didn't get here on just luck. i know some of you out there must just hate me - - - as it seems i'm always bragging about something awesome that i'm up to, or going to, or about to do - - yadada

anywhoo - - this is one of those posts! so if you hate when i starting bragging - - just skip this post altogether. haha

here's a bunch of reasons why this past SUNDAY and MONDAY kicked major ass:

THIS SUNDAY:

1) MY BAND I got signed to Capitol Records DUKES OF DAVILLE was featured in the MTV MOVIE AWARDS.
**BIGGGGG ASSS THANK YOU TO BEN @ MTV - he was the one responsible for pitching dukes to his producer bosses, so he RULES. He has excellent taste in music, and p.s. he's really really hot too! bonus!)

2) I ended up getting TICKETS to the MTV MOVIE AWARDS at the last minute!
**BIGGGGG ASSS HUGE THANK YOU TO MITCHELL FRANK (mayor of silverlake / ala he basically started all things spaceland/echo/malo/etc.....)

and after all that - - how could it get any better?

THIS MONDAY:

3) Mostly everyone that knows me and reads this blog should know I work for Capitol Records - - one of the main reasons I work there is because of the band COLDPLAY. Coldplay, Radiohead, & of course THE BEATLES. So - - - it was a great surprise to be invited to attend the COLDPLAY show @ JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE.

this was very exciting as I actually attended COLDPLAY @ JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE the first time around which was JIMMY KIMMEL's FIRST SHOW! (this was when I worked @ KROQ, and my former boss - who taught me everything i know - AMY STEVENS was the one that booked Coldplay - - like in 1 day or something! It was bananas. Superbowl sunday, they closed off the streets - - just jam packed full of action.

This time around - - it felt more intimate - - maybe since I was about 2 feet away from the band! hahahaha

yep. be jealous. my life rules this week. but i do in fact work hard for the money. i go big - or i don't go at all.
hard work does pay off - and no matter what - i still turn into a superduper dorky fan when i see bands like COLDPLAY/RADIOHEAD up close in person. This was very special, and I think you MAGGIE SIKKENS for giving me your ticket - - I have great friends (just in this post - i'm thanking BEN @ MTV, MITCHELL @ SPACELAND, MAGGIE @ CAPITOL, damn - - i got HOOKED UP this week!

and despite what anyone says - - i can't wait to hear the new coldplay record - - it doesn't matter if they don't have huge radio 'singles' = = if coldplay pooped in a bag - - i would probably buy it. haha.

A big thank you to those of you who made it out to Miss Peggs' birthday Friday before last.

Bret You've Got It Goin' On! (Youtube Video)

Yeah he does! I almost tripped up the stairs of club 86 last night when I saw Bret at the decks - - - I said to Ana 'hey wow that guy looks like Bret from Flight Of The Conchords! Funny!' and she's all 'It Is!' HAHAHA
I turned into a 15 yr old girl, all giggles and giddy, wanting a photo for my new default. So before I dorked out and asked for a pic, i ran into the girls bathroom to fix my hair, makeup & make sure my perfume/deodorant was holding up . . . (i always have a mini febreze spritzer just incase!!)
Even though it was 99 degrees in the womens restroom, i gave myself a quick bouffant (thanks cass for the lessons! i love it!) so here is the results - - i'm really happy with the turnout - - it looks like we are a cute couple or something: (wishful thinking!)

Don't we look good together? Yeah i think so too. Bret, call me, and i'll give you that tour of Capitol Records that i promised. (that's my usual pickup line - - - 'hey do you want to go to the roof of the Capitol Records tower?? um yeah - I could hook that up! Lets go!') WORKS EVERY TIME!

It's my b-day and i'm having all my new favorite bands on one bill! Come on down to Spaceland and celebrate with me!

New Kids Dreams Can Come True TWICE!!!

Last night something very very special and one of a kind occurred down on the Sunset Strip. None other than the New Kids On The Block played a “private”/”secret” show rehearsal in preparation for their upcoming appearance on Good Morning America this Friday.

The only logical thing I could think of doing when I found myself standing in the venue awaiting the kids first appearance on a stage in front of fans in 15 years – was to PINCH MYSELF. HOW the HECK did I finally get the chance to see my 6 year old dreams fulfilled? I spent my younger years playing with the nkotb Barbie Dolls, wearing the themed nightgowns while sleeping in my official nkotb sleeping back with the matching pillowcase – this was serious business for me as a kid. Sadly though, the closest thing I ever got to seeing them in concert was watching one of their live shows from a Vegas hotel room…until now!!!

Thanks to my good friend and co-worker Gina Star I was informed about this secret special event on Monday and God bless the soul of Peter Torres (Rock A&R for Thrive) for pulling through and getting Jenna and I on the house list for this event.

Around 8:30 a blank white screen covered the curtains of the stage of the House of Blues Sunset and the shrill screams of grown women filled the room like an arena. A montage style video full of tons of New Kids nostalgia on film proceeded to remind each and every one of us why we were there… after all these years we were all just as excited as we would have been back then.

The white screen was replaced by 5 microphones and as the curtains rose so did the decibels in the room, to such a level that one would think they were at the Staples center witnessing 20,000 pre-tweens cheer for Miley Cyrus.
The Kids (or men, rather) hit the stage sharp dressed, in shape and accompanied by a full line of back up dancers. The stage reached into the middle of the room and NKOTB danced their routines and hit their notes with such finesse…we all forgot they are now in their 30’s and 40’s? The room was enamored, elated, and ecstatic - the energy was unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed.

It was a short performance, The Kids played a wonderful medley of their hits, which included Step By Step, Please Don’t Go Girl, Hangin’ Tough, The Right Stuff and more. They then continued with their new single “Summertime” and finished off the night with one more song and dance - along with a very sweet farewell to the crowd.
Cell phones and cameras were not aloud in the venue, but thank God for my boots – I snuck my blackberry in and towards the very end I was lucky enough to snap a few shots to share with you all. Check ‘em out below as well as a few youtube vids I thought were quite appropriate to share.

my first autograph i was ever excited about was from the NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK back in the daaaaayyyyyyy. (The Hangin Tough' tour - - right before the Funky Funky X-mas tour)
My dad is a television engineer and happened to work on this show - - he surprised me with an autographed copy of the entire show script - - signed by all 4 members of New Kids On The Block. I was shocked and so surprised that my dad (who has a rule never to ask for an autograph, or photo from famous people) actually hooked up the best gift EVER.
Turns out - - years later he told me that him and his buddies forged all the signatures of the New Kids On The Block - - he had been lying the whole time! man what a letdown! note to all lying fathers out there - - - keep the lie going! your kid will NEVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!

all this NKOTB talk is for a reason - - i just got word they are playing a secret show TONIGHT @ the HOB Anaheim!!!! soooooo exciting! if anybody has an extra ticket - email me! heather@hellyadeejays.com

Ravished Hearts in Africa: Getting Word Out

So, I realize that this is a music blog… And most of the time you would come here to hear about our next show or a new video that is amazing or a band that you have to take a listen to… Not that there is anything wrong with that, in fact the people I am going to tell you about today I met at a show this winter. They are friends of a couple of the bands we work with here at Hell Ya, and just like the rest of us they love the arts and music… They just happen to be using their talents on a different front for the next two months.

I met Joshua at The Shys residency at the Detroit Bar earlier this year. He is a close friend of several of my friends and colleagues and though we had seen eachother many times, we had never spoken. Joshua told me of the trip he would be making a month from then to Africa where he would be working with a team of talented people to document and spread the word of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. They will be living there, speaking with the people, visiting orphanages, helping wherever they can, hoping that maybe the knowledge they gain can shed light for the rest of the world.

HIV and AIDS is a worldwide epidemic. The number of cases in the US grows yearly, but that is in no comparison to Africa where an estimated 5% of the adult population is living with HIV or AIDS, causing over 1.5 million deaths in 2007. What is even scarier is the lack of knowledge of the disease. Keri, one of the members of the Ravished Hearts team received an email from her friend Megan who was working for the Peace Corp in Tanzania, described in notes on their website, “She had attended [a church service] soon after arriving in the village she now called home. The local pastor gave a sermon speaking out against the use of condoms, citing condoms is what gives one AIDS.” And that’s not all, a friend of mine who lived in Africa for school was told to wear a wedding ring on her travels since a common misconception is that if you have sex with a virgin it will cure you of HIV, causing the numbers of rape to go up in the culture. The misinformation is leading to millions of deaths. With no cure in sight and the growth of those infected with the disease, the silence of the subject is extremely alarming, to say the least.

It is so easy to be “out of sight, out of mind” especially when the sight is such a horrible one to see… But I ask you to spread the word. Talk about it. Tell your friends, neighbors, co-workers, your favorite bloggers, parents, and siblings, ask them to do the same. The more people aware of the challenges of the world, the more of a chance we have to save it. Joshua, Ryan, Keri, Breezy and Megan have taken the step to enlighten, now they just need your help getting word out.

So either that music supervisor is either A) super awesome and apparently we love the same shit, i need to get in touch. or B) is my friend/and or a music supervisor that I've already been in touch with - both Dukes & Metro have been on about every Hell Ya! Mix of the past year!

Nothing is more satisfying than seeing your work come to fruition. I am still in shock that I'm even INVOLVED in this project, it's too damn good! Turns out everything ALWAYS happens for a reason, and I was meant to do just this!
I just can't wait till I can play it for everyone I know!! (you know i will now anyways - - that's just how i do things. the more people that know about it - the better right???? with that said, here's my new favorite dukes track - shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I have been so f-ing busy that I forgot to give a quick recap of the last 1029310374 hell ya nights - - - so before I forget AGAIN - I wanted to quickly post about Venus Infers.

I first heard about this band from LARRY LITTLE from his kick ass TANKFARM compilation. Right away I loved the track, and when I saw a photo of the band I instantly thought of KINGS OF LEON. (hot)
These guys are damn good. I mean really good. I couldn't take my eyes off the lead singer for a number of reasons: 1) he's really pretty 2) he's really tall and super thin (*i like my rockstars to dissapear when they turn sideways!) 3) he's got some serious pipes 4) he started and played the whole set SHIRTLESS! SEE PHOTO

(mind you this is at the ECHO, i'm sure most people in the audience were put off by this, but I applaud them for having the balls to do it. Take that hipsters. If you got it, flaunt it! If you don't, create it! haha

So for fans of Johnny Borrell (RAZORLIGHT) & Kings Of Leon, etc.... this may be your new favorite band!

I cannot believe how long it took me to tell you guys all about this phenomenal experience Heather and I had a few weeks ago, I apologize for the time delay on this post, just be sure to read below – this is a band you don’t want to miss the boat on…

On April 18th Eli “Paperboy” Reed and The True Loves put on a stellar performance at the Continental Room in Fullerton. Although I have been to this part of the O.C several times this little spot totally slipped below my radar and I am sad it took me so long to discover it. Boy do I feel out of the loop! Check out some photos below of this place and you’ll see what I mean…

The setting was so unique, and the crowd was beautiful. Eli and the True Loves got the entire place moving their feet; even Miss Heather Peggs who swears she doesn’t ever dance could not stand still. I felt like we were transported straight to the early 1960’s, I don’t know how the night could have been more perfect.
I was absolutely blown away. It’s really quite difficult to explain in words how much fun I had or to express how great the music was. You should have seen the smile that literally did not move from my face the entire night.
Eli Reed passionately belts out perfect note after note of music that is reminiscent of Otis Redding and other pioneers of soulful rock. His accompanying band was flawless and just as full of passion as Eli himself. This soulful sound has definitely been making its way back up on the charts with influential artists like Amy Wineshouse paving the way. It is without question that Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the True Loves are just at the forefront of their stardom.
